Report of man with gun at grade school unfounded; lockdown lifted

An Oceanside elementary school was locked down for about an hour while police searched for a suspected gunman rumored to be roaming the campus.

The report of a gunman at Laurel Elementary school was "unfounded" and the campus lockdown has been lifted, said Lt. Leonard Mata of the Police Department.

Police searched the campus beginning about 12:30 p.m.  The lockdown was lifted just after 2 p.m.

According to 10 News in San Diego, police said that three third-grade students at the school were at recess and playing near a fence when a man approached them and told them to "run, run, run."

One of the students told police she thought she saw a gun.

The students ended up telling a teacher about the experience, which led to the lockdown.

School was in session at the time of the lockdown.
