Gardena police shoot man suspected of stealing car

A man suspected of car theft was shot and wounded near downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon following a pursuit that began in Gardena, authorities said.

Gardena police were investigating a report of a stolen vehicle shortly before 1 p.m. when they tried to capture the suspect, who fled in the car, Gardena police officials said.

Officers pursued the suspect on surface streets and the freeway before the chase ended at 22nd Street and Broadway about 1:20 p.m.

Following a brief foot chase,  officers confronted the suspect and an officer-involved shooting was reported. Gardena officials would not elaborate on the specific circumstances of the shooting nor did they comment on how the suspect's actions led to the use of deadly force.

The suspect, who was taken into custody at the scene, was transported to a local hospital, where he was being treated for unspecified injuries.

The investigation into the shooting is being handled by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Gardena police said.
