Marine recruit held after fleeing boot camp across airport runway

A Marine recruit remained in custody Friday after being arrested wearing only a T-shirt and boxer shorts while apparently trying to escape from boot camp by fleeing across the runway at San Diego's Lindbergh Field.

Officials said the unidentified 22-year-old had climbed two fences, including one topped by razor wire, that separates the boot camp from the international airport. He was cut and may have had his pants torn off as he climbed the fences.

The recruit was arrested by airport security Thursday while trying to hide near one of the terminals, officials said. He had arrived at the boot camp on Monday and was undergoing initial screening before beginning the training regimen, they said.

The Marine Corps is cooperating with civilian authorities in the case, boot camp officials said. Flight operations at the airport were not interrupted.
