Long Beach man killed after he was thrown from SUV

A man was killed this weekend in Long Beach after he was thrown from a sport utility vehicle that hit a center divider and rolled over several times.

Three other people also were ejected from the white 2002 Chevy Suburban in the accident that occurred about 8:40 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement from Long Beach police. Two passengers trapped inside the vehicle were pulled out by personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department, according to the statement.

The driver and two passengers were hospitalized in critical but stable condition, according to the statement. Two other passengers were treated at the hospital and released.

The dead man was identified as Vernon Onofia, 29, of Long Beach.

Investigators believe the SUV was speeding east on Del Amo Boulevard when the driver lost control and crashed, according to the statement by police.

Witnesses told police the SUV may have been racing a newer model four-door Infinity, perhaps a G35.

The Infinity stopped after the crash, then headed west on Del Amo and north on Orange Avenue, according to the news release.
