A Santa Ana man was in surgery after an early morning officer-involved shooting Friday in the city.

Officers were contacted shortly before 2 a.m. by a resident who said there was a man with a gun in his neighborhood located off North Gunther Street and Morningside Avenue, said police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department.

When police arrived, they set off on foot and encountered a 43-year-old man with a large handgun exiting a garage.

The man was ordered to drop the weapon, but refused to comply, which led to the officer-involved shooting, authorities said.

It wasn’t clear who fired first, Bertagna said.

The man was hit in the torso and taken to UC Irvine Medical Center. It wasn’t known if he would survive.
