1 wounded before gunman sprays deputies with AK-47 fire

At least one person was wounded by a gunman wielding an AK-47 assault rifle who later sprayed deputies with bullets during a vehicle pursuit in Compton, authorities said Tuesday night.

The alleged gunman and another suspect were apprehended Tuesday night after deputies swarmed the streets of Compton, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

No deputies were injured and no shots were fired by deputies during the incident that began shortly before 6 p.m., Capt. Mike Parker said.

He said deputies from the Century Station heard gunfire and responded to Long Beach Boulevard and Oaks Street in Compton, where they saw a victim on the ground. They called paramedics and took off after two suspects fleeing in a vehicle.

The passenger then began firing rounds at the deputies as they followed the vehicle. The gunman bailed out of the car and took off running near East Pine Street and North Santa Fe Avenue, authorities said. The driver fled in the vehicle as additional deputies saturated the area.

‘Clearly these guys are a danger to the community,’ Parker told The Times.

The driver crashed his vehicle and was apprehended. The suspected gunman was also taken into custody by deputies who seized the AK-47.

‘This is a gun that belongs on a battlefield,’ Parker said.
