Basketball superstar-turned-businessman Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson has endorsed Mike Feuer for Los Angeles city attorney, the Feuer campaign announced Tuesday.

Johnson, now part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and a well known L.A. businessman and philanthropist, previously backed Rocky Delgadillo, who defeated Feuer in the 2001 race to become city attorney.

‘Whether it was writing laws to promote public safety, curb gun violence, enhance children’s health, create jobs, protect consumers and seniors, or improve our schools, Mike has been a leader for all of Los Angeles,’ Johnson said in a statement released by the Feuer campaign.

Feuer, a former city councilman and past state assemblyman, and City Atty. Carmen Trutanich are widely viewed as the front-runners among the four candidates on the ballot in the March 5 municipal primary. The others are private attorneys Greg Smith and Noel Weiss.

Feuer has racked up a wide range of endorsements but the Trutanich campaign, citing two independent polls that show the incumbent city attorney in the lead, has downplayed the significance of Feuer’s backing.

‘The Trutanich campaign will accept the approval of voters over the endorsement of City Hall insiders any day,’ the campaign said in a recent statement.
