The top contenders in the race to become Los Angeles’ next mayor are locked in a tight fundraising battle, with both reporting Thursday that they have collected more than $4 million in contributions and city matching funds.

City Councilman Eric Garcetti raised $727,503 in the fourth quarter of 2012, and City Controller Wendy Greuel raised $672,230 in the same time period.

With less than two months to go before the March 5 election, Garcetti has nearly $3.6 million in cash on hand, or about $324,000 more than Greuel.

Councilwoman Jan Perry came in a distant third, having raised a total of about $2 million, with $1.3 million in cash on hand.

The sole Republican among the top contenders has not yet reported his fundraising, though an independent committee backing Kevin James’ candidacy reported raising $200,000.

A fifth candidate, Emanuel Pleitez, qualified for city matching funds, according to his campaign, which reported that he raised a total of $212,954.
