Woman briefly held hostage in Sacramento recounts daring escape

A 49-year-old man was arrested in Sacramento after a chase in which he briefly took a woman hostage in her home, authorities said.

Sacramento police said Antwan Adger refused to pull over when officers tried to stop him on an outstanding warrant. During a pursuit, he hit two cars, then ran into a home on 64^th Street near 2^nd Avenue through the back door and took a woman hostage, police said.

"I felt like all the blood was draining from my body. Like, is this really happening? So I just started yelling at him to get out of my house," Cathy Scoto recalled.

Scoto was able to flee her home and Adger surrendered about an hour later. He was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, false imprisonment and burglary in addition to the outstanding warrant.

Scoto said she was on the phone when she looked up and saw an intruder.

"I didn't know what this guy was going to do. You imagine the worst-case scenario," she said.

During those tense minutes in her home, Scoto said she tried to keep him talking as she planned an escape.

"I just knew that he didn't want to get caught, obviously. He just wanted to get out of this one," Scoto said.

She said she grabbed a kitchen knife and put it in her pants after Adger asked her to check the windows.

She told Adger that police were everywhere. And they were.

"He was crawling through the dining room to the kitchen area," she said. "Once he did that, I hit the door. I felt really in control until I got outside. But then I thought, something could have happened."
