Glendale to consider banning gun shows on civic property

Despite the protests of gun advocates who say the restriction will not curb gun violence, the Glendale City Council on Tuesday will consider banning gun shows from its civic auditorium.

The council is to discuss several options, which include canceling a rental contract with the Glendale Gun Show for upcoming events, banning all gun sales on city property or allowing scheduled gun shows to continue through the rest of the year, then enforcing a ban, according to a city report.

The ban proposal resurfaced in December in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn., where 27 people died, including 20 first-graders.

In 2006, Councilman Rafi Manoukian unsuccessfully proposed a ban on gun shows on civic property. The civic auditorium has hosted gun shows since 1992.

Gun show advocates call the events a family affair and say a ban wouldn’t curb violence. Manoukian says the city shouldn’t be profiting from gun sales.

In the last three years, the venue has generated about $158,000 in revenue from the Glendale Gun Show. In 2013, the show is expected to bring in about $57,000, according to a staff report.
