A former U.S. customs and border protection officer charged with raping two women was sentenced Tuesday to six years in state prison.

Miguel Lerma was accused of raping one of the women in September 2009 after she passed out from drinking too much alcohol. The woman later awoke lying in some bushes, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.

In the second rape, Lerma picked up a prostitute in November 2010 and drove her to an industrial area of Garden Grove, where he raped her, according to prosecutors. He fled in his car.

The first victim alerted authorities after the rape. Investigators interviewed Lerma and collected DNA evidence, which tied him to both attacks, the district attorney’s office said.

At the time of the rapes, Lerma was employed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
