An 84-year-old woman was severely mauled Thursday by two dogs who attacked her while she was taking a walk in Jurupa Valley, authorities said.

The woman was walking in her neighborhood off 54th and Beach streets about 9:40 a.m. when two pit bulls or pit bull mixes, which belonged to a neighbor, sneaked under a fence and attacked her, said John Welsh, a spokesman for the Riverside County Department of Animal Services.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene after neighbors called 911.

“There were some eyewitness accounts that the woman was almost left for dead by the dogs,” Welsh said.

She was in critical condition at Riverside Community Hospital.

“It was a very, very serious attack,” Welsh said.

Animal services has located the owner of the dogs, which have been impounded. It was unclear whether they would be euthanized, Welsh said.

He said the attack is a reminder for pet owners to have a secure wall or fence around a property with big dogs.

“I am actually pretty shaken up about it,” Welsh said. “Because I’m thinking of this grandmotherly woman getting attacked by these two big dogs. It’s terrible.”
