Doctor shot to death in Newport Beach exam room identified
The doctor shot to death in a medical office near Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach was identified Tuesday as 52-year-old Ronald Franklin Gilbert, authorities said.An autopsy is expected to be performed Tuesday, said Orange County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino.
Authorities were called to Hoag Health Center–Newport Beach about 2:45 p.m. Monday after receiving a call about a shooting. They found Gilbert, of Huntington Beach, with several gunshot wounds on his body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A suspect was detained and arrested without incident. Police have not released the suspect’s name. Workers in the building said the shooting occurred in the doctor’s exam room.
"I sit right at the front desk. I would have caught the first bullet," said Becky Calderwood, who works two doors down from the office where the shooting occurred. "This is nuts. People are just shooting everyone all the time."
Gilbert was a physician with Orange Coast Urology in Newport Beach. He was a professor of urology at UCI Medical School and had been chief of the Hoag Hospital urology department.
