Doctor fatally shot at Hoag Hospital outpatient center, police say
The man shot multiple times and killed Monday afternoon at a Hoag Hospital building in Newport Beach was a physician, police said.
Newport Beach Police Department Deputy Chief David McGill confirmed that the slain man was a doctor but had no other details about him or the alleged gunman, who was taken into custody without incident at the scene, a second-story office building at 520 Superior Ave.
Officers responded to a call of multiple gunshots about 2:45 p.m., police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe said. When officers arrived, they found the victim and the suspect in a second-floor office at Hoag Health Center - Newport Beach, less than a mile from the hospital.
The victim died of his wounds at the scene. Lowe said he had been shot in the upper body.
No other injuries were reported, Lowe said. The relationship between the victim and the suspect, identified only as a man, was not immediately clear.
McGill said there is no risk to the community, calling the shooting a "very isolated incident."
"It's another tragedy, unfortunately," he said.
