Cal State trustees will hear budget proposal

The California State University Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday and Wednesday to review details of Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed budget, which provides an additional $125 million in funding for the 23-campus system.
The governor has proposed that $10 million be directed toward expanding online classes. He is scheduled to attend the meeting in Long Beach to argue that the use of technology can save money and provide greater access to courses.
He made the same appeal last week to University of California regents in San Francisco.
Cal State this month unveiled a new systemwide initiative, Cal State Online, with the first few programs limited to students who must complete coursework for a bachelor’s degree.
Tuesday’s meeting will be the first presided over by new Chancellor Timothy White, who succeeded his predecessor, the retired Charles Reed, last month.
