Bodies of mother, daughter found in frozen Northern California pond

The bodies of a mother and her 5-year-old daughter were discovered Thursday in a frozen Amador County pond, authorities said.

An Amador County sheriff’s deputy and animal control officer were called to a home Monday in Pine Grove to secure a llama that had gotten loose, but found no sign of its owner.

The next day, deputies returned to the home to check on the residents after concerned neighbors reported not seeing them all day.

A neighbor called the sheriff’s office that evening to report that the animals at that home had not been taken care of. The neighbor also told deputies that there was a hole in an iced-over pond north of the home.

Wednesday, deputies returned once again to check on the home and brought a dog along with them. Nothing suspicious was found at the home and nothing was missing or out of place. The dog did ‘express interest’ in the pond, investigators said.

Thursday morning, a search of the pond by air and a trained dive team led to the discovery of 46-year-old Karen Anderson and her 5-year-old daughter, Amelia Arago.

They were found 30 feet from the shore in 8-foot deep, 38-degree water.

Investigators say no foul play is suspected.
