Eric Ronald Sargeant Jr. was stabbed repeatedly during the confrontation Tuesday afternoon. Detectives are investigating reports that Sergeant was stabbed because he refused to allow the attackers to use his cellphone.

The adult taken into custody was identified as 20-year-old Francisco Zavala, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said. The other suspects were described as 15 years old and 17 years old. All three live in an unincorporated area east of Hemet.

Anyone with information is asked to contact homicide detectives at (760) 393-3500 or the sheriff’s dispatch center at (951) 776-1099.
