Stranded hikers rescued by helicopter in eastern San Diego County

Two hikers stranded without cold-weather gear on El Cajon Mountain in eastern San Diego County were rescued by a sheriff’s department helicopter Friday night.

The two were lost, cold and wet, according to Sgt. Mike Forbes of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Santee station. Although lost, the two were able to make a cellular phone call seeking help.

A first sheriff’s helicopter sent to the scene was unable to find the two because of the weather. But when conditions improved sufficiently, a second helicopter found the two in a deep ravine and used a hoist to lift them to safety.

The woman, 46, was ‘shivering uncontrollably’ and was taken to Grossmont Hospital. The man, 56, was taken to his car. They were not identified.
