Torrey Pines shooting triggered by report of nude man, police say

A confrontation that led a state parks ranger to shoot a machete-wielding man in the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve began when authorities were investigating a report of a ‘nude male acting irrationally,’ the San Diego Police Department said Friday.

Rangers found a clothed man hiding inside a tent Thursday afternoon in an apparent homeless encampment in the wooded area, according to police detectives. The man ‘became confrontational and verbally combative’ and turned toward two rangers with a machete,’ said Lt. Jorge Duran.

A ranger described as an eight-year veteran fired once at the man, hitting him in the chest. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The reserve between La Jolla and Del Mar includes hiking trails and a visitors center, access to the beach and panoramic views of the ocean.
