Riverside County SWAT officers kill man threatening wife’s life

SWAT agents in Riverside County shot and killed a man who had threatened his wife’s life and was trying to break into a house where the woman was caring for a baby, authorities said Tuesday.

A woman called the Beaumont Police Department about 9 a.m. Monday to report that her husband “was going to kill her,” according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

An officer arrived at the home on Morgan Avenue, just east of Interstate 10 off Brookside Avenue, and found the man pacing in front of the garage. The officer ordered the man to show his hands, but the man would show his hands only one at a time and appeared to be hiding something behind his back, officials said.

When the man retreated inside the garage, a California Highway Patrol police dog was sent in. The man shot the dog, which is expected to recover.

SWAT agents could see the man inside the garage with a handgun. Crisis negotiators then attempted to persuade the man to surrender peacefully. Instead, the man tried to break into the house through an interior garage door. Two members of the sheriff’s SWAT team shot and killed him.

The woman and her infant were found inside the home unharmed, authorities said. No one involved in the incident was identified and it was unclear if the man was the father of the baby. The sheriff’s deputies who fired their weapons were placed on paid administrative leave during an investigation, which is standard. No law enforcement officials were injured during the standoff.
