Avalanche injures 2 skiers at Squaw Valley; snowboarders blamed
Authorities believe snowboarders caused an avalanche at Squaw Valley Resort that injured two people Sunday morning, officials report.
The avalanche was reported at around 9:50 a.m. on a section of the KT-22 peak.
Officials say that three snowboarders triggered the avalanche, with a ski patroller and several witnesses seeing the slide.
Two skiers were treated at the scene, although they weren’t buried by the avalanche. A search was launched for other possible victims but none were found.
All people were accounted for by 11:50 a.m.
A 39-year-old woman was taken to the clinic and released, while a 16-year-old boy had to be taken to the Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee for a shoulder injury.
“We would like to thank the Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows ski patrols and dog teams, as well as all of the volunteers for their quick and effective response,” Amelia Richmond, Squaw Valley’s PR manager, said in a statement.
