School bus mechanic killed in freeway crash in San Diego

A bus mechanic for the San Diego school system was killed Thursday when the bus he was repairing was struck by a motorist who lost control of her car on a rain-slickened freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The bus, which had no passengers, had broken down on Interstate 805 before 7 a.m. The mechanic was working under the hood of the bus when it was struck in the back by a 41-year-old woman driving a 2005 Nissan Altima, the CHP said.

The mechanic, described only as 32 years old and a resident of Ramona, was trapped in the engine compartment of the bus and later pronounced dead at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego.
