San Diego police are investigating an officer-involved shooting at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, officials said Thursday.

A call was made to police at 2:18 p.m. reporting that a suspect had been shot by a park ranger and was both handcuffed and conscious. The suspect reportedly was armed with a machete and a knife. He was taken to a local hospital.

The heavily wooded reserve, with eight miles of hiking trails and unobstructed views of the ocean, is just off the Coast Highway between Del Mar and La Jolla. Park officials describe it as a "wilderness island in an urban sea."
