Hundreds of DUI checkpoints planned through holidays
An end-of-year crackdown by Los Angeles-area law enforcement agencies has prompted a spike in DUI arrests, and officials warn drivers that they'll be looking for impaired drivers during the holidays.
Last weekend, officials at more than 100 DUI checkpoints throughout the Southland made 456 arrests for driving under the influence -- down from the 598 DUI arrests made during the same weekend in 2011 but much higher than during a typical weekend, according to a release from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.
Two pedestrians were struck and killed by drunk drivers over the weekend, authorities say.
“Lots of people will be out during this busy holiday season enjoying themselves and the holiday festivities, and we want everyone to be safe on our roadways,” said Glendora Police Chief Rob Castro, in a statement. “Please be forewarned, if you are caught driving impaired, you will be arrested.”
