Greeted with the news Monday that the U.S. Supreme Court did not decide whether to hear California’s gay marriage case, some spending their morning in West Hollywood struck an optimistic tone.

Rather than expressing frustration at another delay, a number of people said they think it’s only a matter of time before the high court hears a case on gay marriage--and rules in favor of it.

Jason Romaine, a 31-year-old screenwriting student who lives a block outside of West Hollywood, pulled up a Supreme Court email update from the American Foundation for Equal Rights while sitting at a coffee shop with his laptop open.

He said he’s eager for the high court to hear the state’s Proposition 8 case.

‘The tide is turning,’ he said, citing November election results and states that passed laws allowing gay marriage. ‘I think for the Supreme Court to do anything not in favor of gay marriage at this point would be laughable and disgraceful. I just don’t see that happening at all with the current state of how people feel.’

‘I definitely want the case to go to the Supreme Court,’ said Romaine, who is gay. ‘I think that would be an awesome galvanizing event for our community, and something we’d be victorious in.’ TIMELINE: Gay marriage since 2000

Minutes later, Mark Decker emerged from a gym with his workout bag over his shoulder. As an eight-year resident of West Hollywood, he said people there ‘want the Supreme Court, given what happened at the ballot box, to follow up.’

Decker said he thinks the Supreme Court often waits for public opinion to change before making a decision.

‘Now,’ he said, ‘the people have decided.’
