Free Metro rides New Year's Eve; Angels Flight costs a penny

Angelenos still unsure of their New Year's Eve plans can count on one thing: A free ride from Metro.

All Metro bus and rail lines will be free from 9 p.m. Monday to 2 a.m. Tuesday, the transportation agency announced. Regular fares will go into effect at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Transportation systems in many U.S. cities offer free rides on New Year's Eve to help curb drinking and driving.

Also in Los Angeles, downtown's historic Angels Flight will cost only one cent for riders on Monday. The penny fare marks the 111th anniversary of the funicular railway and matches the cost of an opening day ride on Dec. 31, 1901.
