7 people to receive free hip and knee surgeries

Seven local residents will receive free hip and knee replacements at Keck Hospital of USC on Friday as part of a broader outreach to patients who cannot afford to pay for the operations.

All of the medical care, including surgery, hospitalization and post-operative treatment, will be covered.

The outreach effort, Operation Walk USA, is helping coordinate the surgeries in nearly 30 states. The surgeons are volunteering their time and the manufacturers are donating the implants.

Among the patients benefiting in Los Angeles are a former building contractor who fell off a ladder and needs a hip replacement and a gardener who has osteoarthritis in both hips and said he can barely walk and is in constant pain.
