Gunman fires in Sacramento County parking lot, wounding baby

Authorities searched Tuesday for a gunman who opened fired in a crowded Sacramento County parking lot, wounding a baby when she was hit in the face by shattered glass.

The 11-month-old girl was in a car in the parking lot of a Shop Smart when the gunman opened fire Monday afternoon, said officials with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

Paramedics checked the baby at the scene. She was not hospitalized for her injuries.

Police counted 10 shell casings, with bullets riddling the car the baby girl was in, at least one other car parked nearby and even blasting out a front window pane of the Shop Smart.

The victims reported to police that they did not know the suspects.

"There were no words exchanged as far as we know," said Lt. Tim Cotter of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. "It began with a ‘hard look’ as far as we know."
