Police killing of grad student in dorm a 'tragedy,' university says

A graduate student at Cal State San Bernardino was fatally shot Saturday night by university police after a violent altercation at a dorm that sent one officer to the hospital.

Sid Robinson, a spokesman for the university police department, told KTLA News the shooting was a "tragedy" and a "terrible way" to end the semester.

The student's name was not released, but he was described as a male in his 30s.

Lt. Paul Williams of the San Bernardino Police Department told the Press-Enterprise that university police officers responded to a disturbance at a dorm. A graduate student got into an altercation with the officers, who opened fire.

"The altercation became physical and the subject became violent. Sometime during that, the officers feared for their safety. They discharged their weapon, striking the subject," Williams told KABC-TV.

The student was pronounced dead at the scene and one of the officers was taken to a hospital for treatment.

San Bernardino police are investigating the incident.
