Fresno student brought gun, 50 rounds of ammo to school, police say
Police removed a 14-year-old student from a Fresno high school after he brought a gun and more than 50 rounds of ammunition to campus Thursday, amid rumors on Facebook that someone planned to "shoot the place up."
Authorities approached the ninth-grader, who had apparently been playing with ammunition on the Central High School campus, in a classroom. They found a .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun and the ammunition in his pockets, according to the Fresno Bee.
The student was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm while on campus, carrying a firearm in a public place and being a minor in possession of a concealed weapon. There was no indication, however, that the online rumors of a shooting were either credible or linked to the boy, authorities said.
In the wake of this month's elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., where 20 first-graders and six adults were shot to death by a gunman, a number of California schools have coped with threats of violence.
In Los Angeles County, police arrested a 24-year-old Pomona man who allegedly made a threat on Facebook about shootings at several elementary schools. They also seized nine guns from his parents' home.
And in Orange County, a Huntington Beach High School student allegedly left a note on a teacher's desk threatening to detonate a bomb.
