Freeway shooting narrowly misses baby; mother wounded

Woman Shot While in Car on 170 Freeway

A woman driving on the 170 Freeway with a baby in the car was shot and wounded by an assailant Friday evening, officials said.

The woman, who was not identified, was rushed to a local hospital, and her condition was unknown. A source with knowledge of the incident told The Times her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Her baby was not hurt, but officials said a bullet came close to the child.

Another vehicle pulled up next to her and opened fire shortly after 7 p.m. near Sherman Way, said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Cleon Joseph. The motive for the attack was unclear.

The woman was able to pull off the freeway and call for help. She was taken to a hospital and was receiving treatment Friday evening.

The assailant fired multiple rounds at the woman's vehicle, police said. A child riding with the woman apparently was not hurt, according to initial reports.

According to KTLA News, the baby was strapped in a child seat. A bullet pierced the seat, but the child was not hit.
