California Highway Patrol officers fatally shot the driver of a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe early Sunday after a high-speed chase on Interstate 8 and surface streets in El Cajon, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

The Tahoe reached speeds of 95 mph on the freeway and then 80 mph on surface streets before the driver lost control and the vehicle rolled over, landing on its wheels, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The driver got out of the vehicle and moved toward the CHP officers, making ‘movements leading the officers to believe he was reaching for a weapon,’ the department said.

The driver was hit with multiple rounds fired by one or more of the CHP officers. He was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 3 a.m. The name of the driver was not released.
