A suspected car thief was killed Sunday morning after exchanging gunfire with deputies in unincorporated Whittier, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said.

Whittier police officers were attempting to stop a stolen car near Norwalk and Washington boulevards in west Whittier when suspects fired on police about 12:30 a.m. and then fled, authorities said. Sheriff’s deputies joined in the search for the suspects.

The search ended in a stand-off with the two suspects barricaded in a garage on the 7700 block of Norwalk Boulevard. Nearby homes were evacuated.

The suspects fired at least one shot out of the garage at sheriff’s deputies, according to a sheriff’s statement.

A woman came out of the garage about 4:30 a.m. and surrendered while her male companion remained inside, authorities said.

The suspect, who was armed, emerged from the garage about 6:50 a.m., and deputies fired at him, according to sheriff’s officials.

The suspects were not identified.

The deputy-involved shooting will be investigated by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office and the Los Angeles County coroner, as well as the sheriff’s homicide bureau and internal affairs bureau.
