Authorities search for injured hiker as night falls

Authorities are searching for an injured hiker who fell off a trail near Mt. Wilson.

The hiker, a 23-year-old male, was a mile and a half into a trail at mile marker 62.5 at Angeles Crest Highway when he slipped over the edge, said Lt. John Hocking. During the fall, the hiker injured his leg. His friend was able to hike back to the base of the mountain and call the Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies from Crescenta Valley Station responded to the call at 3 p.m. and tried to locate the hiker before the sun set and temperatures dropped. The temperatures are in the low 30s.

‘It’s much colder up there and that is definitely a worry,’ Hocking said.

A Montrose search-and-rescue team is also helping look for the hiker.

[Updated at 11:09 p.m.: Members of the Montrose and Sierra Madre rescue teams located and rescued Leiland Merritt of Pasadena late Thursday, according to a report from KCAL-TV Channel 9. He suffered no serious injuries.]
