Three convicted in Craigslist ad murder
Three teenagers were convicted Thursday of first-degree murder in the robbery and shooting of an 18-year-old college student who answered a Craigslist ad for a computer.
Rashon Abernathy, 18, Seandell Jones, 19, and Shaquille Jordan, 18, were convicted in the slaying of Garrett Berki, a graduate of La Jolla High School and a student at San Diego Mesa College.
Prosecutors told San Diego County Superior Court jurors the three tricked Berki into going to a location in the Paradise Hills neighborhood in May 2011 by using phony names in the listing. Instead of selling him a computer, the three robbed him of $600, prosecutors said.
The three sped off but Berki and his girlfriend chased them in their vehicle and cornered the three in a dead-end street. One shot was fired through the windshield of Berki's car, according to forensic evidence.
The three, facing potential life sentences, are to be sentenced Jan. 25.
