Thanksgiving travel rush begins in Southern California

The Thanksgiving travel rush has begun in Southern California.

Millions of travelers are expected to hit the roads, airports and train stations Wednesday for the long holiday weekend.

At LAX, spokeswoman Mary Grady said about 1.8 million people are expected to fly into or out of the airport during the 10-day period from last Friday to the end of the weekend. More than 100,000 are expected to pass through the airport Wednesday, although more are expected Sunday, when folks are making their way home.

LAX officials were braced for an added degree of difficulty Wednesday because union groups planned protests at the airport, but as of 8 a.m., Grady said, traffic was moving smoothly.

She did warn people traveling through Chicago to check with their airlines, as dense fog had caused delays and cancellations at that airport that were already rippling out to flights at LAX.
