San Diego man jailed on suspicion of beating elderly couple

A 20-year-old San Diego man was arrested Thursday afternoon on suspicion of beating an older couple who were collecting cardboard behind stores at a strip mall in Lemon Grove.

Wyatt Bradley was booked into county jail on charges of elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery and attempted carjacking. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond.

Bradley attacked the couple -- the husband is 63, the wife is 70 -- as they were collecting cardboard at about 2 a.m. Wednesday to sell "to help make ends meet," said San Diego County Sheriff's Sgt. G.  Hampton.

The couple was taken to a local emergency room. The husband was treated for cuts to the face and head and then released; the wife remained hospitalized overnight with a possible brain injury, Hampton said.

After knocking the couple to the ground, Bradley attempted to take the couple's car but was unable to get it started, Hampton said.
