San Diego Democratic challenger leading incumbent GOP congressman
Votes are still being counted, but Democratic challenger Scott Peters' lead over Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Carlsbad) is growing.
Peters, a former San Diego City Council member, is not waiting until the count is official to begin acting like the winner. He went to Washington this week for a series of briefings for new members of Congress.
Meanwhile, Bilbray is also in Washington: for the lame duck session of Congress. Bilbray has yet to concede.
As of Friday morning, Peters leads Bilbray by 50.72% to 49.28% in the race for the newly drawn 52nd Congressional District, which includes San Diego and the cities of Poway and Coronado. In raw numbers that's 136,345 to 132,468.
The county registrar reports that 120,000 mail and provisional ballots countywide have yet to be counted, although it is unclear how many of those are in the 52nd District.
