Temperature records set as region bakes in 90-degree weather
Record-high temperatures for the day were tied or broken Monday across Southern California as the region baked in summer-like heat that is expected to last one more day.
Downtown Los Angeles topped out at 94 degrees, tying a record set in 1898, the National Weather Service said.
Long Beach Airport recorded 93 degrees, breaking by three degrees a record that was set in 1976. Los Angeles International Airport reached 91 degrees, tying a record set in 1976.
In Santa Barbara County, Santa Maria Airport recorded a high of 94 degrees. That broke a record of 92 degrees set in 1949, according to the Weather Service. Santa Barbara Airport also hit 94 degrees, topping the 87-degree record set in 1976.
In the Inland Empire, Riverside hit 95 degrees, which tied a record dating to 1988.
The warm weather was being caused by high pressure over the Great Basin, which was creating offshore winds, the Weather Service said. Above-normal temperatures were expected to continue on Tuesday before cooler ocean breezes start blowing.
