Police dog sniffs out Stockton schools for contraband
A 4-year-old police dog named Gordon is being used by the Stockton Unified School District to sniff out contraband, officials say.
Just since last month, at least three students have brought handguns to school."We did have two kids in middle school, who brought a gun, handed it to the other and the second child, when he went to put it in the pocket of his pants, the gun discharged,” Stockton Unified School District Police Chief Jim West said.
Police also arrested a 14-year-old boy who brought a 9 mm handgun on campus in a separate incident.
"We were just very fortunate that no one was hurt,” the chief said.
And because of those incidents, within the past couple of weeks, the district has Gordon making rounds to the 50-plus schools, including K-8, high schools and adult schools as well.
Gordon is characterized as a “contraband dog.”
“He finds illegal drugs. He finds drinking alcohol,” said his handler, Debi DeShon as Gordon zeroed in on a small bottle of vodka she had hidden in a wheel well of a car.
Gordon sits next to his find to alert his partner.
“And that’s how he tells us he smells something,” she said. “Our goal is to find absolutely nothing,” the chief said. “It’s all about keeping these things away from our kids, away from our campuses and keeping everybody safe.”
