Overturned big rig clogs traffic on 5 Freeway in Mission Viejo

The California Highway Patrol is reporting major delays on the northbound 5 Freeway at the Crown Valley Parkway exit due to an overturned big rig blocking the right lanes.

Officials received calls just after 2:15 a.m. of a two-vehicle crash in Mission Viejo, where a Scion collided with a truck carrying tomatoes, causing the truck to overturn.

Traffic was reduced to just one lane for nearly four hours, and at 6:15 a.m. CHP officials opened the two left-hand lanes in addition to the carpool lane.

CHP officials said it will take until at least 7:30 a.m., but potentially longer, to offload the tomatoes from the truck and set the big rig trailer upright.

Authorities said the driver of the Scion is being investigated on suspicion of driving under the influence.
