Navy SEAL from Northern California killed in Afghanistan

A Navy SEAL from Arcata in Northern California has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Sunday night.

Petty Officer 1st-class Kevin Ebbert, 32, was killed Saturday by gunfire in Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan. He was assigned to an East Coast SEAL team out of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek - Fort Story at Virginia Beach, Va.

"We have lost a courageous patriot who selflessly answered our nation's call to defend freedom and protect us from terrorism," said Capt. Robert Smith, commander of Naval Special Warfare Group Two.
