Approximate location of incident shown in black.

L.A. County sheriff's detectives Thursday investigated a deputy-involved shooting in Compton that left a 35-year-old man dead.

A deputy was detaining a man in the 12800 block of Cookacre Street about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday when the suspect attempted to flee, authorities said.

After a brief foot chase, the man began fighting with the deputy and attempted to gain control of the deputy's service weapon, police said. The deputy then shot and killed the man.

The shooting will be investigated by the Sheriff's Department homicide and internal affairs bureaus, officials said.
