Mammoth Mountain ski season opens with snow flurries

It snowed Thursday on opening day of the Mammoth Mountain ski season.  Sort of.

"We're getting on-and-off snow flurries," said Kelly Hertzen, an executive assistant at the Sierra resort. "There's a good crowd here and it's not horrible weather. The winds have died down."

The season began at 8:30 a.m. when the first chairlift broke through a banner. Lifts one and three are open, along with three ski runs, Hertzen said.

Resort officials are anticipating more snow Friday and Saturday.  Another storm is being forecast for Wednesday. Skiers and snowboarders found manufactured snow mixed in with remnants of 18 inches of snow that fell in late October.

Although a crowd count was unavailable midafternoon on Thursday, officials had predicted about 1,000 skiers and snowboarders for opening day.
