LAX labor march could affect Thanksgiving travel, officials warn

Thanksgiving travelers are being warned to get to LAX even earlier than usual this year because hundreds of union workers are expected to march at the airport Wednesday.

The march could snarl traffic in and around the airport during one of the busiest days of the year, said Los Angeles International Airport officials.

The demonstration is being organized by Service Employees International Union Local 1877, which has a dispute over health benefits with a contractor that employs security personnel, skycaps and wheelchair assistants at LAX.

The SEIU said more than 1,000 workers and supporters were expected to arrive at the airport for the demonstration.

According to The Times’ travel blog, the airport has warned travelers to add 90 minutes to their planned arrival time at the airport on top of the usual two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.

Those driving or shuttling to or from the airport from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. should expect phased-in closures of westbound lanes of Century Boulevard between Airport and Sepulveda boulevards, and northbound lanes on Sepulveda Boulevard between Imperial Highway and 98th Street.

The airport plans to keep all entrances open, though the California Highway Patrol may need to shut the Sepulveda Boulevard exit of the 105 Freeway during the demonstration, the LAX statement said.
