Jose Luis Saenz had been on the FBI’s Most Wanted list since 2009, with his face in post offices across the United States before he was captured last week.

But as Times reporter Paige St. John reported today, California parole officials dropped their warrant for his arrest and dismissed the alleged killer from parole even as a manhunt for him gathered steam.

Officials said the state no longer had jurisdiction over Saenz and cited a 2009 state law meant to reduce prison crowding that required nonviolent felons to be placed on unsupervised parole an not returned to jail unless convicted of a new crime.
