Inmate shot by guards at High Desert State Prison

November 1, 2012 | 10:32 am

An inmate at High Desert State Prison was shot by guards while he and two other boot-wearing inmates allegedly kicked another prisoner in the head, state corrections officials said Thursday.

The shooting took place Wednesday afternoon at the Lassen County prison. A prison spokesman said the victim lost consciousness in the attack, and was taken to an outside hospital for treatment, as was the alleged attacker, who suffered a wound to the hip.

The unnamed victim was serving a 33-year sentence for murder. The injured attacker, 36 and also unnamed, is serving a three-year drug-related sentence.

The other attackers, now moved to the prison's segregation unit, were serving sentences from Orange County -- one of them 37 years for kidnapping and the other nine years for selling controlled substances.
