Hawthorne police shoot man allegedly wielding gun
Hawthorne police shot a gun-wielding man in the leg after he led them on a chase Saturday morning, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Police tried to stop the man for a traffic violation around 10:15 a.m. near Yukon Avenue and 132nd Street, but he sped away in a chase that lasted about four minutes, said the Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the shooting.
When police disabled the man’s car, he fled on foot and turned and pointed a handgun at officers, prompting an officer to shoot him in the leg, in the 13000 block of Doty Avenue, the Sheriff’s Department said.
The man was taken to a local hospital and is expected to live, the Sheriff’s Department said.
One officer involved in the chase required stitches from falling and cutting himself above the eye.
