Father and mother arrested in connection with infant girl’s death

A Burbank mother and father are under investigation in the death of their 5-week-old daughter after caregivers treating the infant for broken bones notified police.
Burbank police Wednesday arrested 21-year-old Elizabeth Carter on suspicion of child abuse. The father, Matthew Wojcik, 19, has been in custody for several weeks and has been charged with murder and felony child abuse causing death. He is being held on $1-million bail.
Wojcik brought his daughter to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in October, where she was treated for multiple broken bones and brain swelling.
‘[The baby] was shaken very hard, which caused internal injuries,” Burbank police Lt. Eddie Ruiz told the Burbank Leader.
Hospital workers called police to report possible child abuse. The police investigation, which included interviews with hospital officials, revealed the baby had allegedly suffered ongoing abuse, said Burbank Sgt. Darin Ryburn.
The infant’s injuries could have led to brain damage and paralysis, according to a criminal complaint. Two weeks after Wojcik plead not guilty to two felony counts of child abuse, the infant was taken off life support and succumbed to her injuries.
Carter has posted bail and is due in court next week.
