Surfer killed in shark attack off Santa Barbara County coast [Google+ Hangout]
Times reporters Andrew Blankstein and Wesley Lowery will join City Editor Shelby Grad at 4 p.m. to discuss the second fatal shark attack in two years at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
The 38-year-old man killed by the shark was surfing with friends at Surf Beach, officials said. It is unclear what kind of shark was responsible for the attack.
As one surfer swam to rescue the victim and pull him ashore, another called 911, said Sgt. Mark Williams of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department. The call came in at 10:58 a.m., he said.
Vandenberg fire rescue personnel were the first responders, initially attempting CPR but later pronouncing the man dead on the beach, Williams said.
The attack comes almost two years to the day after 19-year-old Lucas Ransom was attacked and killed by a great white shark on the same beach on Oct. 22, 2010.
Officials at Vandenberg advised people to stay away from the beach.
